What are the methods for myoma?
Myomas; 3 can be treated. The appropriate treatment for these disruptions is decided according to the location and size of the myomas. While some myomas will only need to be monitored to cause any symptoms or problems, some myomas can be treated surgically.
Treatment methods can be listed as:
- Observation,
- Surgical methods,
- Drug treatments.
Observation treatment for myomas
In various cases, myomas may be present without causing any adverse effects. The diameter of these myomas is usually a maximum of 5 cm. These myomas do not need to be surgically removed. If there are no problems such as pregnancy or pain, the patient is monitored with an ultrasound every six months and the growth of the myomas is evaluated.
If there is no increase in the size of the myomas during these checks and observations, observation continues. If the myomas have suddenly grown and increased, a decision may be made to perform surgery depending on the patient’s condition. However, surgery is generally not required for myomas smaller than 5 cm in diameter, while observation is preferred. Surgery is also not required for patients who are close to menopause and older. Since myomas will tend to shrink during menopause, observation alone may be sufficient. Summucous myomas in the inner wall of the uterus (endometrium) and myomas that cause problems such as excessive bleeding may require surgical treatment, even if they are small.
Drug treatment
There is no medical treatment that completely solves the problem for myomas. Drug treatments are applied as a support, but they are a very rare method. The drugs that can reduce the diameter of myomas are primarily GNRH analogs. Although these drugs have a shrinking effect on the diameter of myomas, they may not provide permanent solutions. For this reason, not every patient with myomas is routinely treated with drugs.
Surgical methods
If the diameter of the myomas exceeds 5 cm, if there are infertility or other problems, it may be decided to remove the myomas with surgery. There are 2 types of myoma surgeries. Myomectomy is the first of these surgeries. In this operation, only the myomas are aimed to be removed. The second is hysterectomy surgery, where the myomas must be removed together with the uterus. The decision for surgery is made according to the diameter of the myomas, the area where they are located, the complaints the patient has, and whether the patient wants to have children.
Myoma treatment operations can be applied with open or closed methods. However, the generally preferred method is laparoscopic myoma operations. However, if the myomas are very large, if there are many myomas, if the patient is old and the conditions are suitable, open surgery may also be required. In addition, the uterus may need to be removed.
The biggest advantage of the hysterectomy method is that there is no risk of myoma problems occurring again due to the removal of the uterus. The uterus is not removed in patients who undergo myomectomy. For this reason, there is a risk of myomas reappearing. However, after this surgery, the patient’s chance of getting pregnant increases and spontaneous pregnancy can occur.
In which cases does myoma treatment surgery require?
- If the myoma is extremely large (usually larger than 8 cm to 10 cm)
- If it causes excessive bleeding and anemia
- If it causes pressure symptoms such as pain, frequent urination, constipation
- If it is degenerated and painful
- Myomas born in the vagina
- Myomas that continue to grow after menopause
- Torsioned subserous myoma
- Myomas that are thought to cause infertility

Myoma Treatment
What is uterine artery embolization?
It is a method of blocking the vessels that provide blood to the uterus. In this way, the blood flow that feeds the myoma is relieved. For this reason, a decrease in the size of the myoma is observed. This procedure is non-surgical. It is applied through a catheter through the vein.
Is there a herbal method for myoma treatment?
Myomas cannot be treated herbally. For this reason, herbal teas, cures or medicinal mixtures that are claimed to help shrink or treat myomas should not be believed. Such cures or herbal-based drugs can negatively affect general health.
What is acoustic myoma treatment?
The newly developed non-surgical myoma treatment, namely acoustic myoma treatment; is applied with the principle of sound waves. This procedure, which is completed without the need for surgery and without anesthesia, can achieve successful results for suitable patients.
The aim of this treatment is to focus on the myoma regions with sound waves and destroy the myomas. Myomas can be treated without surgery by using high energy on them. The biggest advantage of this procedure is that it does not harm the surrounding tissues or organs. In order to see the targeted area precisely, magnetresonance tomography (MRT) is continuously used during the procedure. In planning this treatment, it is possible to determine the target tissue to be treated and to protect important tissues such as the nerves around the myoma.
Heat changes in the body can only be observed with the MRT method. Thanks to this heat map that provides images and information during the procedure, the energy needed is determined and it is ensured that there is no heat overdose. This procedure does not involve radiation. Thus, it does not have any negative aspects for the patient. Painkillers or sedatives can be used to keep the patient calm during the procedure. The treatment is completed in 2 hours.
