Embryo Freezing: The process of taking male and female reproductive cells from the body and combining them and placing the healthy embryos obtained into the uterus of the mother candidate is called in vitro fertilization treatment. In vitro fertilization treatment is a great source of hope for couples who have not been able to have a baby naturally for many years and who have not been able to get pregnant despite insemination and ovulation treatments. Because women with low egg reserve, anomalies in the cervix and inside, blocked tubes, and men whose sperm quality and number are not sufficient for pregnancy can have a baby with in vitro fertilization treatment.
Considering today’s medical technology and the point reached in infertility treatment, it is possible to say that the most successful treatment is the in vitro fertilization method. In in vitro fertilization treatment, the egg obtained from the mother and the sperm obtained from the father are washed, sorted, fed and developed with certain drugs in the laboratory. Then, the highest quality, properly structured, mobile, mature and most suitable sperm are selected.
The selected quality sperms are placed where the mother candidate’s egg is and it is expected for the sperm to fertilize the egg, just like in natural pregnancy. As a result of fertilization, several healthy embryos can be obtained. Although a single embryo is usually placed in the mother’s uterus, especially to prevent multiple pregnancies, in some special cases two embryos can be transferred.

IVF treatment, the placement of more than one embryo into the uterus of the expectant mother is most likely a sign that a multiple pregnancy will occur. When IVF treatment was first implemented and even up until the last 10 years, even 3-4 embryos were transferred in order to increase the success rate of the treatment. However, in twin, triplet, quadruplet pregnancies, health problems during pregnancy, poor development of the babies, one or more of them being unhealthy, or even losing them, have made it necessary to set a quota for embryo transfer (Embryo Freezing). Because there is a huge difference between an expectant mother carrying one baby in her womb and 3 babies.
In order not to endanger the health of the mother and the baby and to ensure that the baby in the womb is nourished and grows as much as necessary, it is considered appropriate to transfer one embryo or at most two embryos at a time. For this reason, if more than one healthy embryo (Embryo Freezing) is obtained when the fertilization process is performed at the beginning of IVF treatment, the embryos can be frozen and stored for use in the next IVF treatment in the future.

After one or two of the embryos obtained in IVF treatment are placed in the uterus of the prospective mother, if there are any healthy and suitable embryos left for pregnancy, it is best to store them for the next pregnancy plan or IVF attempt. Because as time passes, age increases or medication is used, reproductive cells decrease and reproductive functions slow down. 1-2 of the embryos obtained in the first IVF process, are used, the remaining healthy embryos are mixed with a protective liquid and stored in glass ampoules, frozen at -196 degrees in liquid nitrogen.
Embryos, which can be stored for 5 years as permitted by the laws in Turkey, can be stored for a longer period of time if both the woman and the man request it, with their signatures at the end of the 5 years. When the embryos are to be used, they are removed from the liquid nitrogen and thawed at room temperature. The healthy embryos can be placed directly in the uterus of the prospective mother on the day they are thawed.
Since there is a risk of not being able to get pregnant on the first try in IVF treatment or losing the baby in the womb, transferring ready-made embryos will make the next IVF attempt much easier without the need for medication or medical procedures. In addition, embryo freezing is also very advantageous for patients with polycystic ovary syndrome, which occurs as a result of excessive stimulation of the eggs. Because in this way, the ovaries are stimulated once, a large number of embryos are obtained, and the eggs do not need to be stimulated again.
